The 2016 Tampa Bay Hospice Cup was a huge success!
$52,000 donated to Hospice!
The 2016 Tampa Bay Hospice Cup, including the 31st Annual Morgan Invasion, was a huge success! Over 130 people attended the dinner/auction on April 9th at Davis Island Yacht Club. Guests enjoyed live music and specialty cocktails before dinner. The dinner program included a moving testimonial from Dr. Dianne Morrison-Beedy, dean of the USF College of Nursing, about how the work of hospice care dramatically affects lives of people here in Tampa Bay. The silent and live auctions included such interesting items as vacations in the Bahamas and Egmont Key, an African safari, and a personal portrait of the winner’s boat.
The regatta was the biggest ever! With over 100 boats registered, the Tampa Bay Hospice Cup is the largest keel boat regatta on the west coast of Florida! Held two weeks after the dinner on April 23rd, the regatta participants sailed in perfect weather through Hillsborough Bay. Live music, free pizza, a special rum punch bar, and free kegs greeted the sailors back on shore. The unique "Just For Fun" fleet was more popular than ever, drawing sailors who would rather relax on the water than compete. The awards were presented later in the afternoon by Charley Morgan and Les Lathrop. The winners in the racing divisions were:
- Morgan A – Philip Waller and crew of Long Gone
- Morgan B – Rusty Shenk and crew of Komus
- Morgan C – Richard “Sandbar” Walters and crew of Seahawk
- Morgan D – Mike Noble and crew of Nobility
- Cruising – Art Cupps and crew of First Wind
- Motherlode – Donald Swartz and crew of Endeavor
- Non-Spinnaker – Lee Burstiner and crew of Vendeval - the pearl
- Racer Cruiser – Roger Gatewood and crew of Shazaam!

You may know this event from its 30 year history as the Morgan Invasion. The race organizers teamed up with the Davis Island Yacht Club, Suncoast Hospice, and LifePath Hospice to make this event a marquee regatta for the west coast of Florida. We had an excellent debut event in May 2013, an even bigger events the next two years. We invite all racers and cruisers from the sailing community to support this great cause at our next regatta in April 2016!
We would like to extend a special thanks to 12 Meter Charters in Newport, RI for donating the sailing experience of a lifetime. They offered up a HERITAGE SAILING EXPERIENCE, which was auctioned at our benefit dinner on April 11th, 2015. The lucky bidders win the once in a lifetime opportunity to sail with Charley Morgan on the boat that he designed, built, and campaigned in the Americas Cup.
The Tampa Bay Hospice Cup is open to both Morgan and non-Morgan sailboats. With a strong focus on sailing camaraderie, the event caters to cruising enthusiasts that just want to come out and be part of a fun regatta. In addition to the traditional Morgan Invasion fleets, the regatta also features open non-Morgan fleets for PHRF, Multi-hulls, and a cruiser-friendly "Just-for-Fun" casual fleet.
"Davis Island Yacht Club is proud to partner with Charley Morgan to create an exciting new event around the long-running Morgan Invasion," said Past Commodore Bob Crawford. "Everyone knows the great work done by Hospice and how important it is to Tampa Bay. We are dedicated to supporting this great cause and making this a 'can't miss' event on the Tampa Bay sailing calendar." Proceeds from the regatta will benefit patients and families of Tampa Bay Area Hospice Organizations, Suncoast Hospice (Pinellas County) & LifePath Hospice (Hillsborough County).
